Integrated thematic instruction will be used to create meaningful learning experiences and reinforce learning.
English Language Arts
The aim of English Language Arts is to provide students with opportunities for personal and intellectual growth through speaking, listening, reading, viewing, writing, and representing to make meaning of the world and to prepare them to participate effectively in all aspects of society.
Through the English Language Arts students are meant to develop the abilities to:
- » Comprehend and respond to oral and written language critically, creatively, and articulately
- » Communicate ideas, information, and feelings critically, creatively, and articulately, using various media
- » Think critically and creatively, and reflect on and articulate their thinking and learning
- » Develop a continuously increasing understanding of self and others
Math
Students are set to achieve the main goals of mathematics education:
- » Using mathematics confidently to solve problems
- » Using mathematics to better understand the world around us
- » Communicating and reasoning mathematically
- » Appreciating and valuing mathematics
- » Making connections between mathematics and its applications
- » Committing themselves to lifelong learning

Science
Through the science subject will:
- » Students will develop an understanding of the nature of science and technology, of the relationships between science and technology, and of the social and environmental contexts of science and technology.
- » Students will develop the skills required for scientific and technological inquiry, for solving problems, for communicating scientific ideas and results, for working collaboratively, and for making informed decisions.
- » Students will construct knowledge and understandings of concepts in life science, physical science, and Earth and space science, and apply these understandings to interpret, integrate, and extend their knowledge.
- » Students will be encouraged to develop attitudes that support the responsible acquisition and application of scientific and technological knowledge to the mutual benefit of self, society, and the environment.
Social Studies
Through their participation in social studies students will:
- » Be encouraged and enabled to understand and prepare to exercise their roles, rights, and responsibilities within their family, the community, their country, and the world
- » Demonstrate respect for human equality and cultural diversity acquire an understanding of and appreciation for the historical and geographical forces that have shaped and continue to shape societies of countries around the world
- » Develop the skills and attitudes necessary to become thoughtful, active participants in their communities and as global citizens
Health and Life Planning
Through this subject:
- » Students will learn and apply processes for goal setting and decision making, and will become aware of the effects of their decisions on themselves and others.
- » Students will learn about the range of sources of information and support available to them for a variety of health, safety, and education topics.
- » Students will gain knowledge and skills necessary to make informed choices about their health and safety, and will develop an awareness of the consequences of their choices for themselves and others.
Physical Education
Through physical education:
- » Students will have opportunities to participate daily in a variety of physical activities.
- » Students will develop age-appropriate knowledge and skills for participating productively, safely, and responsibly in a range of physical activities.
- » Students will develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that enable them to attain and maintain a healthy, active lifestyle.
- » Students will develop an understanding of the value of a healthy, active lifestyle.
Fine Arts
The Fine Arts subject including visual and performing arts offer expressive means for students’ self-discovery and exploration of the world around them. Through the creative process, students are able to communicate, giving form and meaning to their ideas and emotions.
The fine arts stimulate students’ imaginations, innovation, and creativity. They also develop self-discipline, self-motivation, and self-confidence, and learn skills and competencies useful to their future employability. Through the fine arts, students also find a source of pleasure and enjoyment and gain a deepened awareness of themselves and their place in their environment, community, culture, and world.
